World Bank Enabling the Business of Agriculture (EBA)

Enabling the Business of Agriculture is a World Bank Group project collecting unique data on the regulatory framework and institutions that can enable farmers to produce and deliver more and safer food. EBA 2017, presents data for 62 countries and across 12 topics: seed, fertilizer, machinery, finance, markets, transport, information and communication technology, water, livestock and land. Two overarching themes—gender and environmental sustainability —are also included.

World Bank Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) Datasets

Established in the early 1980s, the Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) is a household survey program focused on generating high-quality data, improving survey methods, and building capacity. The goal of the LSMS is to facilitate the use of household survey data for evidence-based policymaking, including on small-holder agriculture.

FAO Aquastat

AQUASTAT is FAO’s global water information system, developed by the Land and Water Division. The main mandate of the program is to collect, analyze, and disseminate information on water resources, water uses, and agricultural water management, with an emphasis on countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. This allows interested users to find comprehensive and regularly updated information at global, regional, and national levels. It collects, analyzes, and provides free access to over 180 variables and indicators by country since 1960.

The FAO Fisheries & Aquaculture – Statistics offers statistical data collections highlighting definitions and specifying the structure, sources, coverage, processes, intended use, etc. This is further complemented by the CWP Handbook of Fishery Statistical Standards which includes comprehensive definitions of concepts and details of standard classifications.

The Smallholder Farmers’ Dataportrait is a comprehensive, systematic, and standardized dataset of the profiles of smallholder farmers across the world. It generates a visual representation of the lives of small family farmers in developing countries. It quantifies the constraints they face, and the choices they make, thus informing policies aimed at addressing challenges of agricultural development.

FAO World Programme for the Census of Agriculture

The FAO World Programme for the Census of Agriculture (WCA) provides support and guidance to countries to carry out national agricultural censuses. Data collected provides a snapshot of the state of a country’s agricultural sector – from the size of holdings, land tenure, land use, harvested areas, irrigation, livestock, labor, and other agricultural inputs. This information is vital in agricultural planning and policy-making, research and development, and monitoring of the agricultural impact on the environment.

USDA Economics, Statistics and Market Information System

The annual report “Farms and Land in Farms” presents data on the number of farms in operation, land in farms, and average size (acreage) of farms for individual states and the whole country, including economic sales class estimates for number of farms, land in farms, and average size of farms for U.S.A. and selected states.
